NTN Donates Three Units of “NTN Hybrid Street Lights” to Fukushima PrefectureApril 24, 2018Press Release

For regional disaster and crime prevention measures, and as a proposal for locally produced and consumed renewable energy

NTN Corporation (hereafter, NTN) has donated three units of “NTN Hybrid Street Lights,”*1 which generate power using wind and solar light, to Fukushima Prefecture, as one initiative aimed at coexisting with local communities as part of the company's 100th anniversary activities.

NTN celebrated the company's 100th anniversary this year on March 1, and to show its appreciation for all the local support it has received until now, NTN is currently donating*2 a total of 17 units of “NTN Hybrid Street Lights” to five regions in Japan as an expression of the company's commitment to working together with local communities in the future as well.

During the development of the “NTN Micro Hydro Turbine,” one of the company's natural energy products, NTN received tremendous support and cooperation from Fukushima Prefecture residents for events such as demonstration tests*3 for agricultural water channels within the prefecture.

The donated “NTN Hybrid Street Lights” were installed at three locations. One of them is in front of the main gate of Fukushima Airport Park's Green Sports Area located in the northwestern part of Fukushima Airport. This area is equipped with a tennis court and an open-air plaza for outdoor activities and is a place where many Fukushima residents gather daily for recreation and relaxation. The three donated units will be used as disaster prevention lights and emergency power supply and within facilities.

A donation ceremony was held at Fukushima Prefectural Office on April 11, and NTN's Vice President, Inoue, presented a record to Mr. Hata, the Vice Governor of Fukushima Prefecture. Mr. Hata commented saying, “We will use these units with great care to make Fukushima Airport Park more convenient to users, and to increase public awareness regarding renewable energy.”

NTN will continue its development of natural energy products such as the “NTN Hybrid Street Light,” and will contribute towards the development of a sustainable society.

About “NTN's Hybrid Street Light”

About NTN's Hybrid Street Light

The “NTN Hybrid Street Light” generates power from two forms of natural energy; wind and solar light, to charge batteries and power LED lights that turn on at night. Its vertical axis wind turbine with a proprietary blade shape does not disturb the air around it or generate any swooshing sounds. It makes almost no noise, and can be installed in various areas of local communities, including public facilities such as parks and schools, as well as commercial buildings. The built-in battery provides power for illumination for 5 days when fully charged, and features an independent power supply that can be used as an emergency power supply during disasters or power outages.
