NTN Starts Proposal for an Appearance Inspection Solution Integrating i-WRIST, Wrist Joint Module, with AI and Software Technologies October 17, 2025
NTN Corporation (hereafter, NTN) establishes a collaborative framework with image processing system manufacturers and robot system integrators to further expand the applications of “i-WRIST,” Wrist Joint Module. In addition to NTN's control technology by hardware, we propose optimal solutions for diverse customer needs in appearance inspection within the manufacturing industry by leveraging software and AI technologies. Through this initiative, NTN aims to contribute to automation, savings on person-hours, and quality improvement in production sites.
The “i-WRIST,” developed by NTN, is a robotic module that enables smooth, human wrist-like movements and high-speed, high-precision angle control through our proprietary link mechanism. By equipping end effectors such as cameras or dispensers at the tip, it enables automation of various processes including appearance inspection and grease application.
In manufacturing sites, automation of each process is progressing due to labor shortages and the need for workforce optimization. With the shift toward EVs and electrification in the automotive industry, the production of large die-cast parts with complex shapes is increasing. As a result, there is a growing demand for automated appearance inspection systems that can flexibly respond to workpieces with many inspection points.
Under the newly collaborative framework being established, we will combine image processing technologies that extract defects in place of human eyes with the high-speed and high-precision motion control of “i-WRIST” enabling flexible imaging postures. By integrating this with equipment that supports optimal imaging conditions for image analysis, we aim to provide an advanced appearance inspection solution.
NTN is establishing a framework for providing systems that leverage the expertise of each collaborating company. Based on customer requirements—such as equipment specifications, workpiece details, inspection conditions, deployment schedule, and budget—we will work in close coordination from system proposals and equipment configuration planning to image processing verification, simulation, sample testing, and AI-based judgment. Through this integrated approach, we aim to propose optimal inspection solutions utilizing the capabilities of “i-WRIST.” This collaborative initiative will be first launched in Japan and is planned to expand internationally in the future.
