Academic Society Commendation for R&D on Support Systems for Cerebral Blood Vessel CatheterizationFebruary 18, 2011Press Releases

Yoshitaka Nagano of the Mechatronics Research Dept., New Product Development R&D Center, NTN Corporation (hereafter, NTN) has won the “Chubu Chapter 41st Award for Outstanding Research” from the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE) for research and development of surgical support systems for cerebral aneurysm coil embolization.

This award is given to an individual or research group that has contributed, through research achievements, to the development of scholarship or technology relating to instrumentation and automatic control, and the award was jointly received by Professor Akihito Sano and Professor Hideo Fujimoto of the Nagoya Institute of Technology, who also participated in the joint research and development.

Cerebral Aneurysms may burst and bleed into the brain, causing serious complications including hemorrhagic stroke. Coil embolization of aneurysm is a catheter-based minimally invasive treatment. Further, use of this technique has been increasing due to population aging and early brain screening. To support this treatment, NTN has developed the world's first wire insertion force sensing system, and a surgical support system whose catheter and wire can be operated by the single surgeon who developed and applied that sensing system. The receipt of this award shows recognition of the academic value of papers on these systems published by various academic societies, and the expectation that the systems will contribute to medical care.

Going forward, we at NTN will continue to contribute to R&D on medical devices to protect the health of people.

Award name Chubu Chapter 41st Award for Outstanding Research, Society of Instrument and Control Engineers
Overview of award The award is given to an individual or research group that has contributed, through a series of research achievements, to the development of scholarship or technology relating to instrumentation and automatic control.
Winning topic R&D on support systems for cerebral blood vessel catheterization
Winners Yoshitaka Nagano (NTN)
Professor Akihito Sano (Nagoya Institute of Technology)
Professor Hideo Fujimoto (Nagoya Institute of Technology)
Reason for award The award was given for R&D on support systems for cerebral aneurysm coil embolization (a type of catheterization) because the winners published two papers in the journal of the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers, two papers in medical engineering journals, and 4 papers in medical journals, and thus the developed support system was recognized to have scholarly value in terms of engineering, and great potential by medical societies.
