Development of Non-Contact, Digital Angle Sensor Unit

New sensor possesses superior life and lower noise

NTN Corporation (hereafter NTN) has developed a “non-contact, digital angle sensor unit” with superior life and low noise properties. The sensor detects the joint angle of a movable industrial component and outputs a digital signal for use with a customer's display.

NTN started mass production and delivery of analog angle sensor units in 1993. With the expansion of the construction market and the use of the angle sensor in the dump body of off highway trucks for mining and the bucket of wheel loaders, NTN was able to expand sales of the sensor unit significantly.

NTN developed the non-contact, digital angle sensor unit in response to customer requests for greater reliability of the sensor's output and a reduction in the sensor unit's weight. To reduce product weight NTN changed to an aluminum housing. NTN developed a non-contact sensor to improve the life expectancy of the product and changed to a digital output to reduce signal noise. The outer diameter of the sensor unit and the signal shape remain unchanged to ensure interchangeability with the previous design.

[ Features ]

(1) Non-contact sensor design improves life and reliability of the angle sensor unit
(2) Digital output leads to reduced signal noise in the angle sensor's output
(3) A 26% weight reduction is realized by changing to an aluminum housing.
[Conventional product 0.89kg → Developed product 0.66kg]

[ Application ]

The sensor detects the angular position of a moveable component, for example the boom and arm of a hydraulic shovel or the boom and bucket of a wheel loader.

* NTN intends to exhibit the non-contact type angle sensor unit at “The 16th Motion Engineering Japan” held next spring.
