Development of “High Efficiency Compact LJ” for Halfshafts

NTN Corporation (hereafter, NTN) has developed the “High Efficiency Compact LJ” constant velocity joint for Halfshafts of FR and 4WD vehicles (hereafter, constant velocity joint is referred to as CVJ).

A cross groove type CVJ (hereafter, LJ) exhibits the ability to slide axially to enhance vehicle response, with the benefit of negligible rotational lash. The LJ design is commonly used for rear halfshafts on luxury cars in Europe. In recent years, lighter weight, compact size, and high efficiency have been the new standard for the rear halfshaft, to provide high function capability and enhanced vehicle fuel saving. Superior NVH performance (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) is also required to improve the vehicle driving comfort.

NTN has developed a new LJ that is a lighter-weight, more compact design, with improved torque transmission efficiency and better NVH performance.

It uses ten, reduced size balls (vs standard six balls), thus allowing lighter weight and a more compact design. Another benefit of the design is the reduction of slide resistance and torque loss during torque transmission resulting in higher operating efficiency. This is accomplished by internal design optimization relative to the inclination angle of the ball grooves along the sliding axis.

In response to an increasing demand of high function capability and fuel economy of vehicles, NTN will supply this CVJ globally.

[Features]
