NTN Develops Constant Velocity Joints That Attain the Lowest Idling Vibration in the World

NTN Corporation has developed fixed constant velocity joints (EBJ-M, EUJ) that can greatly reduce the idling vibration caused from engine vibration being transmitted from engine to the vehicle, through the constant velocity joint. This phenomenon is primarily experienced in automatic transmissions during idle conditions such as waiting at a stoplight.

In the past, NTN had developed a plunging constant velocity joint (PTJ) with the lowest vibration level in the world in order to improve NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) of a vehicle, including the vehicle's idling vibration. NTN has followed up by tackling the reduction of idling vibration at the fixed constant velocity joint in response to (1) the need for further quieting in general passenger cars, SUVs, etc., (2) expanded use of diesel engines and direct injection engines with large engine vibration, and (3) increased need for reducing idling engine speeds in pursuit of fuel-efficiency.

With the fixed constant velocity joints (EBJ-M, EUJ), a reduction in the bending load in the operation angle direction is effective in reducing the idling vibration impact to the vehicle. The internal design specifications for the fixed constant velocity joint that affect the bending load were focused through quality engineering and mechanism dynamics analysis (ADAMS). Optimizing the internal design in this way was successful in reducing the bending load by 40% compared to similar products from our competitors. This reduction in the idling vibration around the suspension of actual vehicles is 20% and attained the lowest level in the world.

Future plans are to combine this newly developed part as the standard fixed constant velocity joint with the plunging constant velocity joint (PTJ) and to develop the market for customers who require reduction in idling vibration from the halfshafts.
