NTN Corporation (hereafter, NTN) will exhibit at the “JIMTOF2024 The 32nd JAPAN INTERNATIONAL MACHINE TOOL FAIR” held from November 5 to 10 at held in Tokyo Big Sight, Japan from November 5 to 10.

Against the decarbonization and labor shortages, the machine tool market is moving toward becoming carbon neutrality by saving energy, consolidating machining processes, and improving production efficiency through automation and IoT.

NTN will exhibit various products and technologies in line with the trends in the machine tool market under the theme of “Proposing innovative technologies to achieve carbon neutrality and improve productivity through automation and IoT,” divided into three zones: “Machine tool related products,” “Solution products,” and “Automated and conveying equipment products.”

Bearings supporting machine tool spindles are required to have high speed rotation performance to improve machining speed. Air-oil lubrication, which reduces agitation resistance due to the lubricant, is the mainstream lubrication method for bearings to adapt to high speed rotation. However, since air-oil lubrication requires equipment to supply air, there is a growing need for grease lubrication type bearings to achieve high speed rotational performance in order to save energy of machine tools

In response to these needs, in the “Machine tool related products” zone, NTN will exhibit new products and technologies such as the resin retainer for grease lubrication type bearings for machine tool spindles that enables high speed rotation of grease lubrication type bearings, and the “Angular Contact Ball Bearing for High Speed and Heavy Cutting Machine Tools” that meets the need for consolidation of machining processes of machine tools.

In the “Solution products” zone, we will exhibit products and services that provide total support for bearing lifecycle management, from use to maintenance and operation by customers after purchasing bearings: “Sensor Integrated Bearing Unit” for Machine Tool Spindles, Sensor Integrated Bearing “Talking Bearing,” and “Multi Track Magnetic Encoder Integrated Rolling Bearing.” We will also introduce software and devices useful for detecting bearing abnormalities such as the “NTN Portable Vibroscope” and the condition monitoring system for industrial machinery.

In the “Automated and conveying equipment products” zone, we will exhibit products to contribute to resolving the labor shortages in the manufacturing industry. We will introduce bearings for industrial robots, Wrist Joint Module “i-WRIST” which combines with end effectors such as cameras and lighting to automate visual inspections that were previously performed by humans at high speed, and Parts Feeder for Picking Robot “TRINITTE” which is used for a wide variety of workpieces by linking with cameras and picking robots.

“High Speed and Long Operating Life Grease” for Grease Lubricated Bearings for Machine Tool Spindles

By optimizing the blend of base oils, thickeners, and additives, we have succeeded in avoiding temperature rise and providing a stable supply of grease to the raceway surface and cage pocket-sliding parts. Adopting this grease realizes high speed rotational performance with dmn value*1 of 1.9 million which is industry's highest level as grease lubricated bearings.

“Lubricating Unit for Grease Lubricated Bearings for Machine Tool Spindles”

This is a spacers unit that incorporates our proprietary lubrication mechanism in spacers adjoining the bearing for machine tool spindles. In addition to the lubrication mechanism, outer ring spacer and inner ring spacer are equipped with lubricating oil tank, sensor and processing circuit based on the sensor data, radio module, and stand-alone power supply. Lubrication is carried out at preset time intervals based on the results of our basic tests and analysis of the mechanism of grease deterioration, which ensures the grease durability in high speed rotational conditions and enables the application of grease lubricated bearings under high speed rotational conditions of dmn value of 1.9 million.

Resin retainer that allows high speed rotation for grease lubrication type bearings for machine tool spindles

It realizes high speed rotational performance supporting dmn value of 1.35 million of industry's highest level as injection molded resin retainers for grease lubrication type bearings. By using highly heat-resistant materials through repeated analysis, rotating tests, and strength tests, deformation caused by heat generated due to high speed rotation can be suppressed. It can be applied to high speed rotation areas where the conventional injection molded resin retainers could not be available, facilitating the switch the lubrication type from air-oil to grease.

“Deep Groove Ball Bearing for High Speed Servo Motors” for Machine Tools

It improves high speed rotational performance (dmn value of 1.9 million, 40% improvement compared to the conventional product) and low vibration (approximately 50% reduction compared to the conventional product) as a bearings for servo motors for machine tools. Reviewing materials of the retainer reduces deformation due to centrifugal force and retainer shape is also optimized to increase the amount of grease-filled to improve lubrication. It achieves low vibration characteristic by reviewing retainer pocket shape to make contact between the retainer and rolling elements more stable.

Angular Contact Ball Bearing for High-Speed and Heavy-Cutting Machine Tools

It realizes high speed rotational performance of dmn value of 1.6 million as well as 30 % improved allowable axial load capacity compared to the conventional product. This enables a single machine tool to cover the rough machining work and finishing processes that previously required numerous machine tools. It also helps to further increase productivity of machining centers and complex processing units.

2. “Solution products” zone

“Sensor Integrated Bearing Unit” for Machine Tool Spindles

It contributes to preventing seizing of bearings for spindles by advanced condition monitoring near bearing raceway.

By integrating two devices, an electro-magnetic generator that generates electricity using the rotation of spindle and a radio device, we deleted the external connection cables and wiring space.

The load detection sensor in place of the heat flow sensor conventionally used detects bearing loads and their trends to improve machining quality and productivity. It also enables adjustments to mount bearings in a short time. Furthermore, it functions to prevent seizing of spindle bearings by detecting a sudden increase of preload that occurs before seizing.

Sensor Integrated Bearing “Talking Bearing”

It integrates a bearing with sensors, power generation unit, and wireless device. It can transmit information on temperature, vibration, and rotational speed. As its dimension and load capacity are same as those of standard bearings, it can be replaced from bearings used in existing ones, enabling advanced condition monitoring and early abnormality detection easily.

Multi Track Magnetic Encoder Integrated Rolling Bearing

It is a unit product integrating bearing with magnetic type encoder. By reading changes in magnetic poles of “Multi Track Magnetic Ring” attached to inner ring of bearing with magnetic sensor IC equipped with outer ring, it can detect rotational speed, direction, and absolute angle.

It eliminates the need for transmission devices like couplings that connect joint shaft and rotary encoder, achieving downsizing/lightweighting of robot joint, making assembly of robot easier. Dimensions and load capacity of the bearing in the product are the same as those of conventional bearings, and can be applied to a wide range of robots.

Condition monitoring system for industrial machinery

It is a condition monitoring system that combines a bearing diagnostic application and a data acquisition unit to easily diagnose bearings used in machinery and equipment.

By collecting data from vibration sensors installed near the bearings and diagnosing the condition of the bearings, equipment abnormalities and failures can be detected promptly, leading to improved equipment uptime through planned maintenance.

NTN Portable Vibroscope

It is a device that can measure facility vibrations, and detect abnormalities and damaged positions of bearings. It can be used simply by attaching to the facilities with magnets, screws, etc. Vibration data can be analyzed and managed with Apple iOS smart devices installed the dedicated application.

3. “Automated and conveying equipment products” zone

Exhibits Exhibiting robot module and parts feeder that contribute to automation and efficiency of manufacturing processes in addition to bearings for industrial robots

Wrist Joint Module “i-WRIST”

It is a compact positioning module that achieves a wide range of angle movement and contribute to save the space. This can move smoothly like human wrist at high-speed to perform minor position (angle) changes, which vertically articulated robots are not good at doing.

“i-WRIST” contributes to automation of various processes, makes them efficient and reduces manual labor such as appearance inspection, grease application, and cleaning when combining “i-WRIST” with other robots and attaching end effectors to the equipment.
