Automotive Engineering Exposition 2011

With the theme of “The leading edge of new technology -NTN's contribution to next-generation vehicles with cutting-edge technology-,” NTN Corporation (hereafter, NTN) will have on display to visitors to this exposition a range of technological exhibits, including products aimed at improving fuel efficiency through the use of systems for EV and next-generation vehicles, and high efficiency and low friction technologies.

There will be five main booths: in addition to a section showcasing new products for EV systems, exhibition booths also cover product models for EVs and HEVs, engine and transmission systems, axles and CV joints. The section showcasing new products for EV systems will consist of videos of test drives and computer generated images that give visitors an impression of speed, and in particular highlights the future direction that NTN will be taking for next-generation EV technology.

Main highlights

Products for EV, next-generation vehicle systems

  • In-Wheel Motor System
  • Test vehicle equipped with In-Wheel Motor System for EV Commuter (displayed in the special exhibit corner)
  • One Motor Type EV Drive System
  • Onboard Drive System (test vehicle equipped with system displayed within the booth)
  • Steering System for Steer-by-Wire
  • Electric brake actuator system

Products that improve fuel efficiency

  • Self-mounting type chain tensioner
  • High-speed, low torque deep-groove radial bearing
  • High-rigidity, extra-low torque tapered roller bearing
  • Linear and rotational movement actuators

Main exhibits

In-Wheel Motor System for EV Commuter

Optimize the advantages of the In-Wheel Motor for compact commuter vehicles.

[Features]
  • An In-Wheel Motor module that utilizes a thin hub bearing, allowing it to be stored within the confines of a small commuter vehicle wheel.
  • Drive motors, speed reducers, hub bearings and inverters can be covered by the wheel system for advanced vehicle control.

One Motor Type EV Drive System

EV powertrain that combines a 2-speed gearbox, drive motor and inverter into a single unit

[Features]
  • Coordinated control of the vehicle drive motor and gear change actuator mean quick, smooth, automated gear changes.
  • The system automatically changes to the most appropriate gear ratio to suit the vehicle's driving conditions, which results in smooth acceleration and high-speed driving, even with a small and lightweight drive motor. The system also extends the maximum cruising distance available from a single charge.
  • CV joints - one of NTN's areas of expertise - are combined with hub bearings with internal sensors in the “NTN-one motor type EV power train,” providing a comprehensive drive system.

Onboard Drive System

A small and compact motor module suitable for use with onboard EV

[Features]
  • With no extra unsprung weight and generally compatible with conventional suspension parts, the system can easily be used with converted EVs.
  • Allows individual control of wheels on either side of the vehicle for better driving performance.

Steering System for Steer-by-Wire

A next-generation steering system that improves steering stability and with a number of steering failsafe mechanisms.

[Features]
  • A main motor for steering and sub motor for adjusting toe angle mean the system switches over to the sub motor in an instant (within 0.1 seconds) if the main steering motor fails, for improved safety.
  • An internal reaction force actuator provides the same level of feedback and feel as when operating an ordinary power steering system.

Self-mounting type chain tensioner

A timing chain tensioner that can be installed or removed from the outer engine cover

[Features]
  • A male thread has been incorporated into the outer edge of the tensioner, and a female thread into the engine cover side to allow the tensioner to be fastened.
  • The engine cover no longer needs to be attached or removed, which helps to drastically reduce work time during production and maintenance.
