CSR activities in FY2018

Resource protection

To protect the water resource, the NTN Group is globally working on reducing water consumption and improve water consumption intensity. We conduct water stress analysis by using Aqueduct (a tool released by the World Resources Institute (WRI) that provides free maps and information showing global water risks). We are also promoting mineral resource protection such as by reducing waste and maintaining/improving recycling rates.

NTN TRANSMISSIONS EUROPE: Cooling system improvement

NTN TRANSMISSIONS EUROPE introduced water quality data collection devices for cooling equipment at a plant as well as a system to display the status of treatment. Since the system introduction in August 2018, it has been monitoring various parameters by showing them on an instrument panel designed to display threshold breach warnings. This monitoring system made it possible to monitor and optimize cooling equipment operation parameters and water consumption. The system is currently utilized for monitoring the state of water quality and reducing water consumption. It reduced water consumption by 17% (1,853 kL during the period from September 2018 to March 2019) in comparison to the previous system.

Reducing Water Consumption

Our Japanese business sites failed to meet our water consumption intensity target in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2019. The Japanese target was a reduction of 24.1% relative to the fiscal year ended March 31, 2011. Our overseas business sites managed to meet their water consumption intensity target in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2019. The overseas target was a reduction of 13.9% relative to the fiscal year ended March 31, 2015. We will continue to reduce our water consumption and water consumption intensity in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2020.

Reducing Waste and Maintaining High Recycling Rates

We worked on reducing our waste intensity in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2019, and our business sites in Japan achieved their target of a 3.8% reduction relative to the fiscal year ended March 31, 2011. In the fiscal year ending March 31, 2020, with the aim of reducing waste, we will continue to work on maintaining the waste intensity of our business sites in Japan (a reduction of 3.8% relative to the fiscal year ended March 31, 2011), and on achieving minimum recycling target rates of 98.1% (Japan) and 97.0% (overseas).
