Automotive Engineering Exposition 2017 Yokohama

NTN will run a booth at “Automotive Engineering Exposition 2017 Yokohama.”

With the theme “New Technology Transforms the Next -Make The World Nameraka*-,” the booth will feature the Electric Motor and Actuator series as well as electric module products for automated driving and lower fuel consumption.

The new ULTAGE Tapered Roller Bearing for Automotive Application will also be on show for the first time, as well as the Lightweight Driveshaft for FR vehicle, Grease Lubrication Type High Speed Deep Groove Ball Bearing for EV/HEV drive motors, Auto Tensioner with the Variable Damper Mechanism for ISG-Equipped Engine and other products for reducing automobile fuel consumption and increasing efficiency, to demonstrate the wide range of the latest, next-generation technology aimed to make driving cars smoother.

We look forward to seeing you at the event.

Main exhibits

“Ultra-low Friction Sealed Ball Bearing” for automotive transmissions

Achieved an 80% rotation torque reduction when compared to conventional products and provides a low torque effect equivalent to non-contact sealed type by adopting a newly developed contact seal which arranges arc-shaped (half-cylindrical shaped) micro convexes at regular intervals on the sliding contact section of the seal lip. During rotation an oil film is formed between the sliding surfaces of the seal and inner ring due to the wedge film effect of the micro convexes. This greatly reduces the drag torque of the seal. Also, because the convexes are microscopic, they prevent harmful hard foreign matter from entering the bearing.

High Speed Rotation Ball Bearing for Pulley

Retainers and seals capable of handling the rotating centrifugal force making them capable of rotating at 20,000 min-1, approximately 1.3 times compared to conventional products. And adopt the grease functioning effectively at the low-temperature limits hoot noise when running cold. Using grease additives which slow down damage caused by brittle flaking, which is one of the factors for damage to bearings, and improving heat treatment to enhances low-temperature characteristics of bearing raceway while maintaining protection against brittle flaking. Optimizations made to the seal shape, grease base oil and internal specifications limit the amount of torque applied to seals and stirring resistance of grease, which has also led to a 10% reduction in rotational torque compared to conventional products.

ULTAGE Tapered Roller Bearing for Automotive Application

The optimal design technology for the shape of tapered rollers that maximize the rolling operating life has been modified and improved as a more compact series lineup. This optimal design gives the bearing a high-load capacity that is 1.3-times higher than the conventional product, and improves the rated life by 2.5-times or more. Sliding contact zone between the rollers, inner ring and retainer are also optimized, which raises the permitted rotational speed by approximately 10% to offer the world's highest level in high-load capacity and high-speed rotational performance.

Electric Motor and Actuator

Combine its core technologies of bearings and ball screw product technology with motor design technology and electrical control technology for controlling vehicles to develop the “Electric Motor and Actuator” series. The product lineup features common components and specifications, and available with variations in shape and size, which eliminates the need for individual designs for a shorter development time.

Rear-wheel Independent Steering System

A steer-by-wire steering system that converts the steering amount of the steering wheel to an electrical signal to drive the wheel-turning actuator according to the amount, and changes the direction of the tires, and that has been applied for use to turn the rear wheels. In addition to a one body combined-type layout, the system is also capable of toe angle control which contributes to better driving performance.

Lightweight Driveshaft for FR vehicle

Operating angles required for rear applications have been restricted, to optimize the shape of main components and achieve a more compact size. The use of hollow shafts with wall thickness reduced as far as possible and compact boot helped to reduce the weight to 2.2 kg each, approximately 30% lighter than conventional driveshafts.

Grease Lubrication Type High Speed Deep Groove Ball Bearing for EV/HEV drive motors

Uses a new plastic retainer with revised material combination and shape to minimize the level of distortion due to centrifugal forces when operating at high rotational speeds, and provide a smooth grease supply along the track surface to increase sliding between the retainer and steel balls. The filled grease has also been optimized to resolve issues related to the lack of lubrication when operating at high rotational speeds.

Auto Tensioner with the Variable Damper Mechanism for ISG-Equipped Engine

Making the tensioner available for ISG-equipped engines where the alternator is also used as the starter helps to adjust the belt tension automatically, from tighter when starting the engine to looser when the engine is operating. This improves reliability when starting, and reduces fuel consumption when driving. The tensioner also contributes to better engine efficiency of vehicles equipped with idling stop systems.
